Good Momentum For Override Of Obama Iran Sanctions Veto
Despite Administration spin to the contrary, backers of tougher economic sanctions on Iran (should it fail to curtail its nuclear program) report steady progress in attracting Democratic support.
In fact, they now list 16 Democratic Senators and 52 Republicans who support the sanctions bill. Combined, this would give the bill 68 votes, enough to override a presidential veto.
Among the Republicans, all would vote for the bill except Rand Paul (R-KY) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ). Paul is an isolationist so his view is understandable, but Flake’s view is hard to account for. If you live in Arizona, give him a call!
Among Democrats, the whip count includes:
Ten Democrats who signed a letter by Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) backing the bill:
• Menendez (D-NJ)
• Schumer (D-NY)
• Blumenthal (D-CT)
• Peters (D- MI)
• Casey (D- PA)
• Cardin (D-MD)
• Coons (D-DE)
• Manchin (D-WV)
• Donnelly (D-Ind.)
• Stabenow (D-MI)
Three Democrats who voted for the bill in Committee today but are not on the Menendez letter:
• Tester (D-Mont.)
• Heitkamp (D-ND)
• Warner (D-VA)
Three Democrats who co-sponsored Kirk-Menendez sanctions bill previously:
• Booker (D-NJ)
• Bennett (D-Col.)
• Gillibrand (D-NY)
With Democratic support at a critical mass, it is possible it could swell further. And don’t disregard the impact of Netanyahu’s speech to Congress and the nation. Obama won’t.
