THE TRUMP TRAP
Presidents are often the victims of their own success. They are elected to do certain things. They do them. They succeed. And, with the problem solved, the issue goes away and no longer motivates their voters.
That’s a big part of what is happening to Donald Trump as the Midterm elections approach.
For example, he was elected, in part, to close the border and stop the flow of illegals into the US. He succeeded beyond our — and his — wildest dreams and now the open border is just a memory and no longer the pressing issue it was in 2024. He is robbed of his issue by his own success in solving it.
But, in Trump’s case, the successes are so legion and so manifest that they are taking away all his issues.
Crime? Its at its lowest level in over a hundred years.
Jobs? His tariffs have saved American industries and restored our manufacturing dominance.
Power abroad? We have gone from a pathetic giant to the dominant global power.
Energy? We now out-produce Russia and Saudi Arabia and our daily output of oil is 14 million barrels a day.
Gender roles? Men no longer can compete in girls’ sports, transgender surgery with Medicaid money is ended. We are back to two genders — male and female.
Climate change? No longer does the EPA handcuff our business to combat this natural, normal cycle.
Inflation? Down from 9% under Biden to 3% now.
Taxes? Sliced by the new tax law. And by no tax on tips, overtime, or social security.
School choice? Passed.
Israel? The strongest kid on the block and Gaza largely pacified.
Iran? No nuclear industry, the Strait of Hormuz open, and Iran’s military wiped out.
Abortion? Roe is gone but women have more access to abortion than before.
So what issues does Trump have left? No wonder the opposition to him is reduced to calling him a “king” and is devoid of real issues.
But what remains is Trump’s aggressive, combative personality. Without new fields to conquer, his personality seems not to have gotten the message. Far from relaxing and reveling in what he has accomplished, he remains a combatant — a rebel without a cause. A fighter, still, but without an obvious battle.
Many, like me, appreciate and applaud his style and person. But to many Americans, it is an acquired taste. We were willing to let Trump be Trump as long as we had a dog in the hunt. As long as there were huge, obvious problems to solve and hurdles to overcome. But without them, his personality grates and rubs many the wrong way. It always did but we were willing to put up with it. But his own success has limited our patience and tolerance.
Nor has he been able to structure his campaign around the negatives offered by the Democratic shift to socialism. He has not made manifest the threats a Democratic victory would pose.
It would open the borders again when they zero fund Homeland Security and ICE.
Medicare would go broke under the burden of covering everyone and private health insurance won’t be allowed.
Iran will be free to resume its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
The left will close our refineries, block coal mining and use, stop offshore and Alaska drilling, and choke our oil supply, raising gas prices beyond belief.
The left will raise taxes, likely by saying its just for the rich but, by not indexing the taxes to inflation, it will let the tax increase trickle down to us all just like the Alternative Minimum Tax did.
But being Trump and boasting the most incredible success of any president since FDR, he remains in search of our approval and won’t pivot to the negative campaigning that might save Congress.
Instead, he calls this election a referendum on Donald Trump but without the issues and needs that made him palatable to most of us, his personal negatives are an obstacle he cannot easily overcome.
