MOMENTUM SHIFTING TOWARD GOP AS MIDTERMS NEAR BY DICK MORRIS
Polling shows a decisive shift in momentum in favor of Republicans and President Trump as the midterms are now less than three weeks away.
Two weeks ago, I reported that Democrats led in seven of the eight key Senate races. But current polling (as of October 16) shows the GOP candidates leading, albeit by very narrow margins, in Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Michigan.
The GOP candidates now trail in only Maine, Alaska, Iowa, and North Carolina. And data indicates that Democratic leads in Maine, Alaska, and Iowa are only by the slimmest of margins. Only in North Carolina, among seats currently occupied by Republicans, is the Democratic lead decisive.
If we can win where we now lead (Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Michigan) and overcome very narrow deficits in Maine, Alaska, and Iowa, losing only North Carolina, we will hold our current majority of 53-47 in the Senate.
Data on the House races is still unclear because the polling is not as current, but in 18 key House races where Democrats are currently leading, their margins are paper thin. The Democrats are only 1 or 2 points ahead in five races and only 3 or 4 points ahead in seven more races. In only six races are they more than 5 points ahead.
What is causing the change? Donald Trump’s rallies and speeches. They seem to be raising Republican enthusiasm and likely turnout, particularly in key states.
I loudly protested the failure of Fox News to cover the Trump rallies like they did in 2024. Likely due to popular pressure, Fox News is now broadcasting Trump rallies, giving much of the nation the chance to see and hear the president.
(Fox News and Newsmax together account for about 47% of the electorate.)
Among the Republican themes that are particularly resonant is the potential destruction of Medicare if the Democrats take over Congress.
Democratic demands for Medicare for All, including illegal aliens, ignore the plain fact that the Medicare Trust Fund cannot afford to cover everybody. Were Medicare forced to do so, it would mean that Medicare for All will become Medicare for None.
If the Trust Fund, amassed from the special Medicare tax we all pay, were to run out of money, the program would no longer provide benefits as a right through entitlement funding but would become dependent on annual discretionary appropriations by Congress, just like Medicaid.
The 2026 Report of the Medicare Trustees calculates that, even with no expansion, the fund will stop being able to cover the expenses of the benefits by 2033. If the program were expanded to cover the 222 million Americans who rely on private health insurance, it obviously could not handle the extra cost.
The change in Medicare from an entitlement to a discretionary annual appropriation is not a mere matter of accounting or semantics. Without the guarantee of benefits, the system would be based on rationing where government bureaucrats would decide on whether or not to allow “optional” surgeries like hip replacements and other procedures.
In planning for rationing, federal health regulators have cited a metric called QALYs (Quality Adjusted Life Years) to determine if we are each deserving of such elective surgeries or if our age, disabilities, or chronic conditions make us lousy risks.
Under Medicare for All there would be no appeal and no right to payment or to care. It would be entirely optional and discretionary.
The effect on the elderly of America would be catastrophic.
Amplifying the harm would be the fact that medical supply would be stretched very thin. With their pay capped by federal regulators, there will be fewer and fewer doctors and we will all have to be content with nurses who have not been to medical school to diagnose and treat us.
The Democrat/Socialists understand that if they can put medical care under government control they will have passed the tipping point to cast us into socialism. The government now provides 1/3 of all health spending and it takes up about 1/6 of the federal budget. But over half the population insists on choosing their own doctors and making their own medical decisions. Those now on Medicare enjoy the right to benefits that cannot be denied as long as the program is an entitlement. But Medicare for All would mean welfare for all, a key step — a leap — to socialism.
If the Democrats win, don’t get sick. Medicare may not cover you!
