CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS MUST BE ON POLICY, NOT A REFERENDUM ON TRUMP

Most political figures have higher personal favorability than job approval. But Donald Trump is the opposite. He has a higher job approval —48% in John McLaughlin’s August 24th poll — than his personal favorability rating — only 33% in the same survey.

Unlike other pollsters, McLaughlin asks voters:

“Which point of view is closest to your own; Do you approve of both President Trump and his policies, do you disapprove of President Trump like a lot of his policies, or do you disapprove of President Trump and his policies?”

The results are:

Approve of Trump and his policies 33%

Disapprove of Trump but like his policies 15%

Disapprove of Trump and his policies 48%

So 48% approved of Trump’s policies and 48% disapprove, a rating that has held steady in monthly polls for a year.

Republicans must make the midterm elections about President Trump’s policies and programs and contrast them with the increasingly socialist, big government views of the Democrats.

McLaughlin points out that when asked which view they favor, “a Republican who supports free-market capitalism and a Democrat who supports big-government socialism,” the Republican has a 47-40 lead.

Otherwise, when asked who they favor, a Democrat or a Republican, without any ideological reference attached, the Democrats enjoy a 48-43 advantage.

The conventional wisdom holds that it is important for the Republicans to, in effect, put Trump on the 2026 Congressional race ballot and make the vote a referendum on the president. While this strategy obviously works in the Republican primaries, it won’t work in the general elections. The race needs to be a referendum on Trump’s policies not on Trump personally.

Republicans should make clear that Trump cannot run again and will be gone in two years while the midterm elections’ verdict on public policy will last for a decade or more.

So, the election should be about:

• Do you want open borders with new illegal immigration back again as the Democrats propose or do you want illegal immigrants, particularly those convicted of crimes, deported as the Republicans do?
• Do you want the police to be defunded and handicapped by increased personal liability for their conduct as the Democrats propose or do you want higher police funding and protection against lawsuits by those they arrest as the Republicans do?
• Do you want the arrested for crimes to be freed pending adjudication of their cases as the Democrats propose or do you want those arrested held on bail awaiting trial as Republicans do?
• Do you want higher taxes as the Democrats propose or to cut taxes as Republicans do?
• Do you want to ban fracking as the Democrats propose or to expand oil drilling a Republicans do?
• Do you want government regulation of business to expand as Democrats do or to reduce government regulation as Republican propose?

In the race for Congress, it does not matter how individual Democratic candidates frame or hedge their personal positions on these and other key issues, the likely ten new Democratic socialist congressmen about to be elected will force their majorities, if they win them, to the left and hold the “moderates” feet to the socialist fire.

When the choices for Senate and Congress are reframed to reflect accurately the party priorities, Republicans will sweep to victory.
