John Boehner and Mitch McConnell are AWOL. Obama is front and center and all over the media, but the Republican leaders are silent.
Boehner is an inside politician. He is more comfortable behind the desk, in a conference, or hanging out on the floor than he is in front of the camera.
But he can’t hide during this shutdown. He needs to be out there. Despite their failings, Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole did daily media events. Boehner and McConnell need to show themselves more.
And their message should be: We are not trying to close the exchanges. Buy all the insurance you want. We’ll even subsidize it. But we want to delay for a year the mandatory aspect of the bill. We don’t want you to have to get insurance.
