The race for the Democratic presidential nomination will be about race. The essential Clinton argument will be that Obama cannot win because he is black. The attack will be cloaked in seemingly innocuous rhetoric and code words will abound, but the fact will remain that the Clintons will be telling Democrats: Don’t take a chance on an African American nominee.
We need to dissect and deconstruct all the Clinton words to determine whether there is a racial implication beneath them. Often it will be there.

Of course race will enter into the campaign If the Clintons lose the black vote … they lose … period. The women vote won’t save her. Her campaigns response, blame it on Obama, to the King issue was lame. She sounded Bushy as in “its not my fault”. She should have taken her foot out of her mouth, taken responsibility for her poorly chosen words, apologized and moved on. Quietly rebuking or firing a speach writer or two might provide more lasting help. Taking a shot at Obama … backfire.
I’d like to know whatever happened to the black child the Clinton’s said they were thinking of adopting in the mid-90s? Was that another phony appeal to the hearts of black folks?
Also, Mrs. Clinton stated that no one had done anything about civil rights until the 60s Democrats. What about President Eisenhower desegregating Washington, DC by Executive order. It is unconscionable to re-write history. Let each person take his or her due for their accomplishments. Unfortunately, most Americans do not know enough history to judge whether a statement made by a putative authority is false.
I believe the Clintons know that they can insult blacks as much as they please since there are more women than blacks — even if every black person in America voted for Obama. Moreover, in the general election, conventional wisdom says that black folks would still vote for Clinton over a Republican candidate. (Not me, a black (usually) Republican). Thus, they lose nothing by using the “race card.”
