There are several debates-within-debates going on in the GOP debate tonight:
1. Rudy will try to pull down Romney. He needs to stop Mitt from winning Iowa and setting up a four state sweep of Iowa-NH-Mich-SC. Rudy knows he can’t win himself in Iowa but he’d rather see Huckabee win so Romney doesn’t do the four state sweep.
2. McCain, moving up in Iowa, will try to pass Rudy to revitalize his candidacy by finishing ahead of Rudy in Iowa.
3. Romney and Thompson will try to pull down Huckabee, Romney in hopes of winning Iowa and Fred in hopes of avoiding death by finishing second in Iowa.
4. Huckabee will try to fend off negatives and keep his momentum going.

Huckabee and McCain did very well tonight. Once again, Huckabee distinguishes himself by not attacking Romney for his illegal immigration stance which is clearly worse that Mike’s whne they were both governors. Mike has a compassionate and practical solution to what do we do with the current illegals in our country that are being productive AND the vast majority of Americans do not want them to be sent back. NOT ONE of the major candidates is talking about sending them back, so what do you do with them? Huckabee is the only one that has had a plan before illegal immigration was such a hot topic and they assault him for it. Politics as usual. Romney attacks but doesn’t come up with a plan on the issue- just attack the other guy who has one.
