If Mike Bloomberg decided to run for President, he would have a strong chance of winning the election. As a social liberal and a fiscal conservative, he fits what most Americans want. And, unlike Ross Perot - the last Independent candidate for President - he is an experienced politician who has succeeded in handling the second toughest press corps in the world in NYC. If he ran, he would not just be a spoiler, but would have a serious chance of becoming President.

I do not think he has a chance… It would be madness for him even to consider running for president..

Mr. Morris,
I watch the Fox News programs almost nightly, and my favorite shows are those which feature your commentary. In fact, I turned to my wife the other night and told her that I wish YOU would run for president. Unfortunately, I think you are probably too wise to do that. I don’t have your latest book yet, but I will surely purchase it within the next few days.
They reason I signed up for your site today was largely because of Mayor Bloomberg. With Mayor Bloomberg, I finally see a potential presidential candidate that makes sense to me. I wanted to visit your site and ask your thoughts about Mayor Bloomberg, but to my delight you had already posted some of your thoughts on the matter. I agree with what you are saying on Mayor Bloomberg, and I hope whole-heartedly that you are right. Unless I am completely out-of-touch with what moderate Americans are looking for in a leader, I think both Democrat and Republican candidates should be quaking in their respective boots about his potential candidacy.
I’m looking forward to your book, and to reading more of what you have to say. I find your commentary to be a sensible and believable beacon in what has become a biased, hidden-agenda laden American landscape of media and politics. In joining your site, I feel as though I now have a guide to help me through the upcoming election process.
What I find interesting is the impact this will have on the electoral college. If the 2000/2004 patterns hold, the shift of just one or two states could have dramatic impact on results (just ask Gore and Kerry). NY is no small prize, and the door is open for three (well, 2 and a half) New Yorkers to run for President. While NY is a predominantly blue state, and in the end will likely go to Hillary (assuming she gets the nod), Rudy and Mike are also popular and could be willing to spend money. This would force Hillary to devote resources to a state that, in the past, would be taken for granted (as a NYer, something I resented - I’ve long suffered from Swing State Envy). And the NY market isn’t cheap. And while it is likely that she would hold NY, that’s less certain with our neigbors - New Jersey, Connecticuit and Pennsylvania. PA is the best shot for Rudy - its a huge prize, and still more purple than Blue. He could very well yank it from Hillary. If Jersey were to go, too, it would be almost impossible for Hillary to put together a winning electoral map. Something else to note - Mayor Mike is looking at imposing a commuter tax, which would alienate those in surrounding burbs (especially NJ and CT). I think that would make those states much harder wins for him, and keep the “conservative” vote in those states from fracturing (at least to the same degree as the liberal vote), making Rudy’s chances even better than they appear right now.
One other consideration - All 3 candidates would be formidable, but all would be social liberals from New York. Would this not open a HUGE door for a “true” conservative, also running independent or 3rd, er 4th, party, to enter the race? I’m not sure who’s out there - Fred, obviously, but I doubt he has the personal finances to mount such a campaign. If the candidate were from the lunatic fringe - another Robertson or Buchanon - the impact might be minimal (or is tht wishful thinking), but someone like a Thompson or Huckabee (though not them specifically as, again, I don’t think they’d get the cash) could find an opening.
Dick/Eileen, in my 87 years, man and boy, there are very few political commentators or politicians with whom I have generally agreed across the board, but you certainly rate highest by far. I worked the local media, the streets and door bells, and both major political parties and their leaders in California for over 30 years in a vain effort to liberalize the Republican Party and de-liberalize the Democrats and I think I have as good a sense of what ordinary Americans thing from face to face contacts as you do with your polling experience and seats amongst the mighty.
But I do believe you are dead wrong about Bloomberg. There is not enough money in the world to sell him to the American people.
I have been waiting on your opinion as the most likely President/Vice President team to win both the primary and general elections for both major parties, just to set a bench mark from which to measure your political acumen. It’s easy for political prognosticators, like race-track touts, to appear impressive. Just make enough predictions and sooner or later you’ll look good. But come out now, right at the beginning, and give us your best shot. We can all laugh and cheer later.
I’ll give you mine on the Republicans right now: Thompson receives Tancredo’s endorsement in the primaries and gets on the ticket at the convention. Stong and resolute aganst Illegal immigration and closing our borders and no nutty domestic opinions is the powerhouse that drives this winning team.
So, how about the Democrats? Such a Republican line up can only be countered by Obama endorsing Leiberman. If they can bring in the unions and the money for a grass roots campaign, they would have a good shot at the brass ring. They’ll get plenty of media coverage so why waste money on huge media campaigns?
This line-up will neutralize the Iraq war issues and the party that comes up with a sane major tax revision policy will be the winner.
And no matter who wins, the Iraq struggle will go on and remain with us as long as Americans, and the world, has its love affair with the motor car. Oil rules the world.
It’s basic geopolitics.
